Description

In the 16th century, the wall on the south slope of Hradčany hill lost its defensive function, and thus was partially demolished. This land was then purchased by the local nobility and turned into elaborate gardens, starting with the Fürstenberk garden in 1580. A number of gardens were built adjacent to nearby palaces, most in the Italian style. The gardens were then devastated by the Swedes after the conquest of Mala Strana on August 5, 1648.

The gardens were rebuilt in a more Baroque style, with terraces, sculptures, monumental staircases, fountains, pavilions and galleries. From the higher garden terraces there are beautiful open views of Mala Strana and the city of Prague.

Form north to south, there are five principal gardens:

  • Ledeburská Garden
  • Small Palffy Garden
  • Large Palffy Garden
  • Kolowrat Garden
  • Fürstenberk Garden
